Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking was an English Scientist.  He was born on the 8th of January 1942 He was born in England,Oxford.  His full name is Stephen William Hawking.  His parents were both academics who had studied at Oxford University.

Dinner times were often spent in silence while the family read books.  When he was a teenager Stephen and his friends built a computer out of old clock parts Telephone switchboards and other recycled items.  His friends called him Einstein.

Sadly when Stephen was 21, he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and was told that he only had two years to live.  Motor neurone disease gradually affects the brain cells that communicate with the body muscles.

He had to use a walking stick and crutches when he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease but when it started to get worse he had to use a electric wheelchair.  He became notorious for driving it a little too fast around the streets of Cambridge and running over other students toes.  In 1985 he had a life threatening infection.  He had to have an emergency operation but he could no longer talk.

Stephen Hawking has received many medals like in 1979 he won the Albert Einstein Medal, In 1982 he won the order of the British Empire.   In 1988  he won the Wolf prize in physics.  He died on the 14th of March 2018.

It was very interesting that he came over his challenge of life.

3 Websites

My first Website that I find really helpful and fun is Touch Typing.  You have to type without using one finger. There can be some really funny sentences.  To pass the level you have to get the speed higher or the same as it says and you also have to beat the timer that is set.  Here is a screenshot of some of the levels I have passed.

My second Website I find really helpful is Wonderopolis. This is what my class uses for reading.  If you want to read about tigers or how to make popcorn or who made the mountain bike, you can use this website to find out.  You can also learn about other countries cultures.  Here are two screenshots of Wonderopolis.
This is what it looks like when you are reading a book.

This is what it looks like when you are searching for a book.

My last Website I find interesting and helpful is Prototec which is a Math Website which you can use to help you learn basic facts. There are two ways to do this. One is a sheet test, which helps you learn them. The other is a timer test which helps you learn your basic facts quicker. The only difference between the two modes is that in the timer you have ten seconds to answer the question, or else you get it wrong. Here are some screenshots of Prototec.

This one is when you are choosing what to do.

this one is the sheet test.

Two people who stood up for themselves and others

Martin Luther King Jr once famously said ¨I have a dream¨.  Martin Luther King Jr was born in the United States of America.  At birth he was named Michael King Jr, but his father later changed his name to Martin Luther King Jr.  King was born on the 15th of January 1929.  He died on the 4th of April 1968.  He live in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Martin Luther King believed that it was not right to separate white people from black people and that white people are not better than black people, as many thought at the time. He saw that black people were being disadvantaged, like having to give up their seats on busses and even having to go to different schools. One day he said a speech at the Lincoln Memorial at Washington DC, which made a lot of people listen to what the black people were fighting for.

Martin Luther King had his first experience of segregation at just six years old when he was told he wasn’t allowed to play with his white friend anymore because his friend’s father wouldn’t allow it. In our day we are aloud to play with anyone we choose, which I think is the way it should be.

Rosa Park´s birth name is Rosa Louise McCauley. Rosa was born on February the 4th 1913 in Tuskegee Alabama. She died on the 25th October 2005. She was 92 years old. At a young age her parents split up so Rosa and her mother decided to live in Pine Level, Alabama were her Grandparents lived.

Rosa Parks is very famous for refusing to give her seat up to a white person just because of her skin colour.  She was arrested for refusing to move seats for a white person. I think it was wrong for her to be arrested.  I think she did the right thing because everyone should be treated equally.  It´s only skin color you can change how you are born.

Air Ambulance and Fire Service

The air ambulance and the fire service help save our lives.  These two teams work really hard every day.  None of these services would get the day off for Christmas Day or Easter or any Holidays unless they are rostered off.

Right now the fires in New South Wales, Australia are battling on so most of the fire fighters will have to help try defeat the fire.  But there is not just one there is 150 at the moment.  Here are some ways that can make a fire start and spread Lightning, car crashes, Chemicals, structure fires and arson.

What do firefighters have to wear?  Firefighters have to wear special helmets so they don't breath in smoke.  Firefighters have to wear waterproof rubber gumboots, they have to wear turn out pants and a jacket, they have to wear glove as well.  These are all fire resent to help protect the fire fighters.

One thing the New Zealand Air Emergency team does is fly people to the places that they need to go for their operations or specialist treatment.  There latest technology is the Jet aircraft.  They have to work 24 hours 7 days a week.  The Air Emergency crew always have a nurse on board.  The  Air Emergency team is based in Auckland at the starship hospital.  Just remember if there is a emergency call 111 even if you are not sure the person will tell you what to do.

Swim for a life

Swim for your life what a extremely different life Yusra Mardini has had to me I have never had to swim for survival for a better life.  Yusra Mardini is a refuge from Syria.  She is also a olympic athlete. During her flight from Syria she made the dangerous sea crossing between Turkey and Greece at one point swimming for her life  when the motor of the boat failed.   There were 130 people on the boat.  They were hitting and falling over the top of each other.   It would not have been a fancy boat or a big boat.  Yusra Mardini said, in one of her messages ¨ Believe in yourself and don't give up¨ I think everybody should try and live up to this quote.

How cool it is to have refugees that have been encouraged to compete in the Olympics.  The current 37 refuge Athlete scholarship holders include the 10 athletes who were part of the first IOC Refugee Olympic Team Rio 2016 13 new individual athletes, and a group of athletes preparing at the Tegla Loroupe Refugee Training Centre in Kenya. Yusra Mardini is one of them and I hope I see her competing in her swimming events when I watch the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.  All are being assisted by Olympic solidarity through its Refugee Athletes Support Programme.

Syria is considered one of the most dangerous places in the world this is because of the civil war that started in 2011.  As many as 475,000 people have died and in the conflict millions of people have been forced to exile.  It is suggested to not go to Syria at the moment.  Syria is a war zone, and peace seems as far away as at any time since war began in 2011.

Sophie Pascoe

Who do you think of when you think of New Zealand, Olympian and swimmer? Probably Sophie Pascoe.  Sophie was born in 1993 in Christchurch, New Zealand.  Sophie Pascoe was named flag bearer for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.  In the 2018 Commonwealth Games she swam 100m Breatstroke and 200 medley.

At the age of two Sophie was involved in a lawnmower accident and had to go to hospital and got her leg amputated.

Sophie learnt how to swim at QEll swim club.  Sadly QEll fell down in the 2011 earthquake so the swim club had to train in many different places until the new QEll complex opened in June 2018.  Her international debut was when she was only thirteen.

Sophie has won four gold medals at the Commonwealth Games nine Paralympic gold medals and is multiple World Champion.  At Rio for her third Paralympic appearance Sophie won five medals and broke a world record while taking her total tally to 15 Paralympic medals.  At the London 2012 Paralympic Games the Christchurch swim sensation bagged three gold and three silver medals.  The following year Pascoe achieved her career highlight with five gold medals at the 2013 IPC swimming world champions.  I think Sophie Pascoe is a good inspiration to all young people to never give up and always do your best.

Rugby stars

Jonah Lomu changed rugby union forever when he was unleashed upon the 1995 World Cup. He Weighed 18 stone ( 119kg)  and standing 6ft 5in (196cm) high.  The All Blacks winger had just turned 20 years old but he was about to become a rugby super star.  He had only been caped twice before the 1995 world cup.  He scored 4 tries in the semi final of the 1995 world cup the score was  45-29 to New zealand . He ran over players trying to score a try ( although he wasn't being dangerous).  Eight men teamed up on him to tackle him but failed to get him down.  He made 63 test appearances for the All Blacks scoring 37 tries.

He got diagnosed with kidney failure in 1995. But in 2004 he had to have a kidney transplant. In 2011 he helped with the rugby world cup in New Zealand but during the event the transplanted kidney began to fail and Jonah was rushed to hospital.  He still remains the joint most prolific World Cup try scorer with 15 tries equal with South Africa's Bryan Habana. He still played rugby in 2005 but then retired in 2007. His body rejected the donor kidney in 2011 forcing him to return to dialysis. Jonah Lomu died in Auckland on a Wednesday at the of age 40.

Richie McCaw was the captain of the All Blacks for eleven years.  In his 14 year professional rugby career McCaw has achieved unrivalled success as a leader and inspirational player.  He has led Canterbury provincial Crusaders Super rugby and All Blacks teams to top flight success. As All Blacks captain McCaw won two Rugby World Cups (2011 and 2015). He also won 10 Bledisloe Cups four Tri Nations titles and three Rugby Championship trophies.  His 148 matches for the All Blacks make him the most capped player of all time winning 89% of the games in which he played. He captained the All Blacks on a record 111 occasions leading the team to victory on 98 occasions.

McCaw was named International Rugby Board Player of the Year three times having been nominated on eight occasions. Off the field Richie devotes much of his time to helping other Kiwis. As patron of the Catwalk Spinal Cord Injury trust McCaw helped raise $200,000 for research into the development of a cure for spinal cord injury.  In 2009 Richie McCaw and fellow All Blacks Dan Carter and Ali Williams set up the For Everyone Charity.

My three superpowers I really would want is speed so I can out run people.  My second is really good tackling skills so I can tackle people well and my third skill would be jumping so I can jump really well.

Top team

On Friday the 22 of November the seniors went and did top team and there were 12 activities altogether. Some of them were water activities. We had a group of 8 people and we had to get as much points as we could get. My group got 260 points over 12 activities. My favourite activity was a water activity and you had this pole and there were floaty balls you had to get as much water to the top as you could but there was holes in the pole so you had to figure out how to cover the holes and gets as much water to the top. None of the groups got the balls to the top. It was run by sports canterbury. My team name was the rubber duckies.  We got five minutes for each rotation.

My favourite none water activity was the guess which block it was. You could go up down left right and diagnale but you could not go backwards. Another one was noughts and crosses it was a big game that was on a mat. One tip it is good to have fast people because you had to run a little bit and place yours down. Another cool one was you had boards and on each board had a diffrent maze on it and you had a little golf ball you had to get it in the bucket at the end. You had to get it in the bucket as many times as you could.

Do you think your school would like Top team?
