Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking was an English Scientist.  He was born on the 8th of January 1942 He was born in England,Oxford.  His full name is Stephen William Hawking.  His parents were both academics who had studied at Oxford University.

Dinner times were often spent in silence while the family read books.  When he was a teenager Stephen and his friends built a computer out of old clock parts Telephone switchboards and other recycled items.  His friends called him Einstein.

Sadly when Stephen was 21, he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and was told that he only had two years to live.  Motor neurone disease gradually affects the brain cells that communicate with the body muscles.

He had to use a walking stick and crutches when he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease but when it started to get worse he had to use a electric wheelchair.  He became notorious for driving it a little too fast around the streets of Cambridge and running over other students toes.  In 1985 he had a life threatening infection.  He had to have an emergency operation but he could no longer talk.

Stephen Hawking has received many medals like in 1979 he won the Albert Einstein Medal, In 1982 he won the order of the British Empire.   In 1988  he won the Wolf prize in physics.  He died on the 14th of March 2018.

It was very interesting that he came over his challenge of life.

  1. Kia ora Benjamin, this is Kieryn from the Summer Learning Journey.
Well done for creating such a detailed post about Stephen Hawking! You have shared so much exciting information about Stephen, like the fact that he won so many awards like the Albert Einstein Medal in 1979 and the Wolf prize in physics in 1988. It really is a shame how such a brilliant and talented man like Stephen Hawking got motor neurone disease.
Imagine if you were in a wheelchair and couldn’t move or talk. How would that make you feel?
I noticed that all though this is a part of the Summer Learning Journey, you haven’t completed the required activity. In order to get the points for each activity, you must complete the task correctly.
    This task asks-
On your blog, recount a time when you, or someone you know, experiences a challenge and overcame it.

You have created some amazing posts on your blog, however if you could edit them to include the required tasks I will be able to give you your points accordingly.
    Keep up the great work!
    Nga mihi
